Free Counseling Center Background

The need for more comprehensive and accessible mental health care is a widely known. In August of 2013, a group of committed citizens came together with a mission to fill the gap and serve the growing needs of people in our rural area. In 2015 the Free Counseling Center incorporated and became a 501(c)3 non-profit organization. Volunteering their time, the group has evolved into a dedicated effort to design and deliver counseling services. We seek to remove monetary and operational barriers both short and long term. Selecting and maintaining skilled counselors/therapists and staff will further sustain us.

Volunteer Counselor/Therapists come from four main disciplines: Psychology, Counseling, Marriage & Family Therapy, and Social Work. They are selected by fellow trained professionals and possess at least a Master’s level education in their discipline with extensive experience practicing counseling/therapy. Malpractice/liability is provided by the Federal Tort Claim Act (FTCA) and/or the counselor/therapist’s individual insurance.

The Free Counseling Center is centrally located in River Falls, Wisconsin, with opportunity for outlying service locations. We seek to increase accessibility to quality mental health care by our design and to break down barriers related to mental health.

Donations come from area churches, groups, and individuals. We are grateful to First Congregational United Church of Christ for donating their basement space to the Free Counseling Center to conduct our sessions there.

The Free Counseling Center is governed by a selected Board of Directors who oversees its mission, values, and operation. Current board members: Catherine C. Olson, Ted Tollefson, Jaye Ann Hay, Scott Jacobs, Greg Anderson.

The Free Counseling Center, Inc., is an independent non-profit organization. We have no religious affiliation and are not a part of the Free Clinic of Pierce and St. Croix Counties. We work in coordination with other providers when appropriate and with your written permission
